Ishinca Valley

A great introduction to climbing in Peru, Ishinca Valley offers stunning views, fun objectives, and easy access to world-class climbing. We begin with two great warm ups: Ursus at 5,423m (17,791ft) and Ishinca 5,530m (18,143ft) before turning our sights on Tocllaraju at 6,034m (19,790ft). With a few short sections of steeper climbing mixed with breathtaking views, Tocllaraju is a great introduction to 6000 meter climbing.

Day 1. Your guide will meet you at your hotel in Huaraz at 8 a.m. for introductions and discussions for the trip ahead. Afterwards, we will depart for a hike just outside of the city to begin our acclimatization. We will then return to your hotel for a gear check and any last minute items that need to be purchased.

Day 2. We will trek to Laguna Churup at 4500m (14,763ft). The hike will have great views of rolling hills and the higher peaks of the Cordillera Blanca. We will have the opportunity to dip our feet in the lake while enjoying a nice lunch before heading back to Huaraz.

Day 3. We head out early for a day-climb of Nevado Mateo which includes trail hiking and light scrambling before suiting up with crampons and harness to gain the last of Mateo's 5,150m (16,892ft) summit. After our climb we return to Huaraz for the night in preparation for heading into Ishinca Valley the next day.

Day 4. We load up and depart in the morning for the one-hour drive to Pashpa.  There we are greeted by our burros and organize and load gear before beginning our hike to basecamp.

Day 5. We gear up and head out for the summit of Ursus at 5,495m (18,028ft). The climb takes 4-5 hours round trip, which allows us ample time to continue resting and acclimating for the climbs ahead.

Day 6. We set our sights on the summit of Ishinca at 5,530m (18,143ft). We roll out of camp around 4 am and hike to the glacier to suit up and begin the climb to the summit, returning to basecamp around 3-4 pm.

Day 7. We take a rest day before our ascent of Tocllaraju 6032m (19,790ft). We will be able to go over any desired skill sets for Tocllaraju along with eating, sleeping, and getting stoked for the climb ahead.

Day 8. We ascend to high camp 5000m (16,404ft). This is porter supported for all group equipment. Each climber is responsible to carry his/her own personal equipment. Expect about 4 hours to reach camp. With stunning views of Tocllaraju we will enjoy a nice dinner and then an early bed for tomorrow's climb.

Day 9. Our summit day we depart camp around 3:30 am. The climb consists of moderate glacial terrain with a few short sections of 60-70 degrees. This is a long day of about 11-12 hours round trip back to high camp where we will enjoy a hot meal before returning to basecamp, another 1.5-2.5 hours.

Day 10. We wake up to a nice breakfast, then pack up and load the burros before making the trek back Pashpa to meet our transfer to Huaraz for showers and a celebratory meal.
